OUR STORY
Six Decades of Critical Infrastructure Excellence.
Founded in 1957 as Electrical Construction Limited, ECL Group has evolved from a modest electrical contracting firm into New Zealand's oldest, most reliable, and most trusted infrastructure services business.
For nearly seven decades, this pioneering company has remained at the heart of how Kiwis move and connect, delivering the critical technical infrastructure that keeps New Zealand communities operational, safe, and connected.
From Electrical Beginnings to Fuels Powerhouse
When ECL Group opened its doors in 1957, New Zealand was a dramatically different place, wireless meant radio, television was just arriving, and the nation's infrastructure was expanding rapidly. The company quickly established itself in electrical construction, but it was the burgeoning petroleum industry that would define ECL's legacy and expertise.
For more than 60 years, ECL Group has been the backbone of New Zealand's petroleum infrastructure. The company earned its reputation as New Zealand's and Australia's leading provider of specialist installation and maintenance services in the fuel systems sector, working in environments where precision counts and high standards matter. From retail and commercial fuel systems to aviation fuel infrastructure, ECL built unmatched expertise in one of the nation's most demanding and hazardous sectors.
Building Critical Infrastructure, One Project at a Time
ECL Group's comprehensive capabilities span the entire lifecycle of critical infrastructure—consulting, designing, building, monitoring, and maintaining the systems that power New Zealand's economy. Operating from 18 locations across the country, the company's 260+ strong workforce covers everywhere Kiwis live, 24 hours a day, all year round.
The scope of ECL's work is staggering. Last year alone, ECL physically attended nearly 50,000 jobs across the country. Their 40-seat, 24/7/365 helpdesk, a cornerstone of their service delivery, remotely resolved over 75% of the 200,000-plus tickets worked without needing to dispatch a field technician. This unique support infrastructure ensures immediate response and provides customers with a single point of contact for all technical issues.
The company maintains over 1,500 sites across New Zealand, delivering infrastructure, technology, and maintenance for some of the nation's most iconic brands: Z Energy, BP, Exxon Mobil, Foodstuffs, G.A.S., Istobal, Restaurant Brands, Kempower, ABB, Woolworths, and NZ Post.
Three Pillars of Technical Excellence
Today, ECL Group operates through three integrated business units, each addressing critical infrastructure needs:
Energy Solutions represents the company's core heritage, retail and commercial fuel systems, carwash systems, aviation fuel systems, forecourt equipment supply and installation, compliance and environmental services, and comprehensive preventative and reactive field maintenance. This division maintains ECL's market leadership position in the fuels sector while expanding into adjacent markets.
Technology Solutions brings ECL's proven expertise from the demanding fuel sector to broader applications. The team installs and maintains Point of Sale systems, payments and network systems, EFTPOS terminals, cloud application hosting solutions, unmanned fuel management systems, and food wrapping, weights, and scales equipment. Their 24-hour Service & Support Call Centre monitors all aspects of clients' systems around the clock, providing the immediate support that keeps businesses operational
eMobility Solutions positions ECL at the forefront of New Zealand's transition to sustainable transportation. The division delivers complete end-to-end charge point solutions for commercial and charge point operators, EV charging and power systems for light passenger, commercial, heavy vehicle, and bus fleets, field preventative and reactive maintenance, and remote monitoring, diagnosis, and resolution capabilities.
Pioneering Innovation in Critical Environments
ECL Group's commitment to innovation has consistently kept the company ahead of industry challenges. When New Zealand needed to introduce blended ethanol fuels, a notoriously difficult transition that had failed in Australia and Asia; ECL Group developed a groundbreaking technical solution. The company's smart approach eliminated water infiltration and phase separation issues, earning global safety awards, recognition as New Zealand Contractor of the Year, and worldwide acknowledgment for innovative fuel installation methodology.
In the emerging EV charging sector, ECL has established itself as New Zealand's infrastructure-grade solution provider. The company partnered with industry leaders Kempower and ABB to deploy rapid DC charging technology across the country.
ECL's OpenLoop charging platform enables sophisticated fleet management for commercial electric vehicles, with over 120 charge points connected and growing for enterprise and government customers spanning the length and breadth of New Zealand.
When Disaster Strikes: ECL Delivers
ECL Group's technical expertise and nationwide presence make the company indispensable when communities face their darkest hours. Following the devastating Christchurch earthquakes, Mobil Oil New Zealand called upon ECL Group's expertise to upgrade damaged fuel and drainage systems at multiple sites. Working through extreme earthquake conditions, severe liquefaction, drain sediment, changes to the water table, and ongoing aftershocks, ECL delivered complete design/build solutions.
At two service stations requiring complete replacement, ECL poured one-meter-deep concrete slabs to stabilise fuel tanks and prevent future seismic movement. The company decommissioned sites, removed all fuel equipment, installed three 50,000-liter fuel storage tanks with submersible pumps, fuel lines, dispensers, drainage, and electrical components, and reinstated forecourts with new tank slabs and asphalt. "These projects were extremely challenging given the high-risk environment that existed in Christchurch at the time," ECL noted, yet the company delivered solutions that restored critical fuel infrastructure to the Canterbury region.
During Cyclone Gabrielle's devastating impact on Hawke's Bay in February 2023, potentially the largest mapped landslide-triggering event on record in New Zealand, ECL's infrastructure proved its resilience. The company's reliable systems and 24/7 support capabilities ensured that when disaster struck, critical infrastructure remained operational or could be rapidly restored.
"If a disaster or weather event occurs, like the Hawke's Bay cyclone, our people have to be able to trust and rely on the technology and systems," says Dave Roberts, Chief Executive of ECL Group. Layer3, ECL's technology partner, emphasised the importance: "The work ECL Group does is important. We've got to look after all their infrastructure, making sure it's reliable, robust, and secure, so that they can do their job".
Technology-Driven Future
ECL Group is leveraging innovation to deliver superior outcomes at lower costs. The company is increasing the use of digital connections to managed assets through IoT technology, enabling proactive monitoring, fault prediction, and optimal operations using advanced algorithms. Artificial intelligence is being integrated into service delivery models to improve outcomes while reducing the cost to serve customers.
The Road Ahead
As ECL Group enters its seventh decade, the company stands at the intersection of New Zealand's infrastructure past and future. The petroleum expertise that built ECL's reputation remains vital as New Zealand still relies on robust fuel distribution networks. Simultaneously, the company is pioneering the eMobility infrastructure that will define the next generation of transportation.
The company's vision remains clear and compelling: "ECL is at the heart of sustaining how Kiwis move and connect". The purpose that drives 260+ employees is equally straightforward: "Enabling our customers with the infrastructure solutions, technology and maintenance required to keep New Zealand communities connected and moving".
Legacy of Excellence
From a wireless radio in 1957 to managing IoT-connected charging infrastructure today, ECL Group has continuously evolved while maintaining unwavering commitment to technical excellence, safety, and customer service. The company that began as Electrical Construction Limited has become synonymous with critical infrastructure reliability across New Zealand.
Whether responding to earthquake damage, installing next-generation EV charging stations, maintaining fuel systems at 1,500 sites nationwide, or remotely resolving technical issues through their 24/7 helpdesk, ECL Group delivers the infrastructure-grade solutions that New Zealand communities depend upon.
For nearly 70 years, ECL Group has operated in environments where precision counts and high standards matter. As New Zealand navigates the transition to sustainable energy, urban growth, and technological transformation, ECL Group stands ready, experienced, innovative, and committed to keeping New Zealand moving for the next 70 years.
The story of ECL Group is ultimately the story of New Zealand itself: a nation building critical infrastructure, embracing innovation, responding to challenges with resilience, and always moving forward.
At the heart of it all, ECL Group continues doing what it has done since 1957, delivering the connections that keep communities working, businesses operating, and New Zealanders moving.
